A cornerstone of this practice is the intimate teacher-student relationship, which facilitates personalized guidance and support. Despite this, many still view Ashtanga as a monotonous routine.
Ashtanga classes, especially in the Mysore setting, are rich in modifications and options within individual asanas. In Mysore-style classes, which are akin to private lessons within a group, modifications far exceed those in standard yoga classes. This flexibility allows practitioners to tailor the practice to their unique needs and capabilities. Ashtanga teachers often have years, if not decades, of experience, far beyond the typical 200-hour YTT, ensuring they are well-versed in guiding students effectively.
Ashtanga yoga often gets a bad reputation due to its perceived dogmatism and cultural elements and its appeal to type-A personalities who thrive on discipline. While there is some truth to this, it's important to recognize that Ashtanga also attracts individuals who are serious about their practice. These are not casual yogis or those seeking just a workout; they are dedicated practitioners committed to a deeper exploration of yoga, which can feel exclusive to those used to a more casual approach.
Ideally, Ashtanga yoga is taught in a versatile and inclusive way that caters to all levels. Everyone starts with the basics, builds a strong foundation, and advances from there. Some students progress using modifications and props, while others advance to Fourth Series. Regardless of the individual level, the practice is customizable and accessible to people of all ages, shapes, and fitness levels. It can be modified to fit individual needs, physical limitations, injuries, or personal goals.
Yes, Ashtanga can seem vigorous and demanding, but the depth of the practice is up to the individual. It's a mirror reflecting our inner selves, allowing us to balance the drive to push further with the need to avoid complacency. This self-exploration is a core component of yoga.
Regardless of physical ability, Ashtanga yoga strongly emphasizes breathing, bandhas, and drishti. These internal forms of yoga give strength to the external forms and are accessible to everyone, allowing both beginners and advanced students to have a profound experience. When taught with an emphasis on these principles, they become more important than the actual poses.
To me, Ashtanga's strictness is not excessive; instead, it highlights the shortcomings of other styles that focus too heavily on physical postures without adequately addressing the underlying principles. Ashtanga may appear to be all about physical power, but a deeper exploration reveals a practice that sincerely delves into the spiritual, mental, and emotional dimensions of yoga. It is, in fact, a comprehensive approach that integrates all the limbs of yoga, providing a richer, more meaningful experience than a typical hatha or vinyasa class.
On the surface, Ashtanga may seem like power yoga, but ultimately, it's up to you to decide how far you want to take it.
